Our International Family Adoption Agency Supports the Parenting Journey

International Family Adoption Agency

As an international family adoption agency, Building Arizona Families recognizes that a common issue among children who are adopted internationally or from foster care is food hoarding or food issues. While it can be frustrating to deal with as a parent, there are some strategies to handling it successfully.

Our International Family Adoption Agency Supports Adoptive Parents and Parenting Children with Food Issues

The trauma of an experience, maybe years in the past, could still live with and haunt adopted children. They may have had a deep-seated belief they were going to starve. This belief propels them to take extra food when they are full, take a fist full of candy, or hide snacks under the bed. Here are a few key responses to food issues that may bring healthy results.

1. Compassion. Many adoptive parents can’t imagine what it was like to be starving as an infant, toddler, or youngster. Remember where your adopted child has come from, what their brain is whispering to them, and what they live with.

2.  Reassurance. Let your adopted child know it’s going to be okay, that you will take care of them, and assure them there is enough to eat. It’s reassurance that builds up self-confidence and belief that they actually will be okay. It’s reassurance that plants seeds of trust deep. While the trauma of not getting enough food to eat may always live with your adopted child, you can bring about a sense of peace.

3.  Freedom. Give your adopted child a box, a bag, or a place where they can get food and let them know it is there specifically for them if they feel hungry and put their name on it. This will allow freedom for reassurance that there will be food for them and it gives them control.

These strategies may take some time to implement. Remember, food issues and food hoarding come from a place we may not understand. It’s a deep-seated belief there won’t be enough, they’ll be left out, or have to go without. That’s something no human being should ever have to go through. For adopted children, we can do much to help ease their worries and find comfort.

Our Hague Accredited, International Haiti Adoption Agency Supports You

Whether completing an international Haiti adoption or another kind of adoption, an adoptive family will have many adjustments to make when they bring home their adopted child. As a licensed, non-profit, international Hague accredited adoption agency, we are dedicated to helping our families throughout their international Haiti adoption journey.

When a newly-adopted child, regardless of age, joins the family, both the parents and the child face a period of adjustment. The parents will be getting used to the new role of parenting, and the child will be adjusting to his or her new home and family.

Building Arizona Families Offers Adoption Support for our Forever Families

It is important to understand that the process of domestic and international Haiti adoption and the removal from a birth mother, orphanage, or foster home to an entirely different home and perhaps from another country is a huge change and it can be quite traumatic. Try to see the world from your child’s point of view including the new sounds, smells, food, people, lights, and clothing they are experiencing. Be aware that your child will be grieving. Babies do grieve the loss of the birth mother, sometimes for weeks and months. Some babies withdraw emotionally or cry inconsolably for the first few days. This grief often emerges once they are more settled in their new home. Older children grieve the loss of the life they knew; all they knew is gone and they had no control over anything.

Here are some suggestions for helping you and your child to adjust:

1. Ease the trauma of transition as much as possible. Ask about routines, likes, and dislikes. Some parents have been able to send a receiving blanket or stuffed animal beforehand with their own body scent on it so the child recognizes them by smell. Even if washed on return, it will then have the familiar smell of their prior home to comfort them. When you receive your child, leave the original clothing on for the first few hours or days if possible, keep at least one piece of clothing if permitted (take new clothes to exchange), and keep it, unwashed, in their bed for a few days. Keep food changes to a minimum and slowly transition to new formula or food.

2. Minimize your child’s exposure to anyone outside the family for the first few weeks after international Haiti adoption placement. Let no one else hold the baby except the parents, even at the airport on your triumphant arrival home. Isolate yourselves with your new child at home for the first week or two, with as few visitors as possible. Do not let visitors hold your baby. If family members want to help, ask them to bring meals, do shopping and errands, or clean the house. If challenged, say the social worker or doctor advised this early isolation.

3. Recreate the routine. A predictable routine will help your child feel safe and secure. Keep everything quiet and low-key for a few weeks with no welcome home parties or other excitement.

4. Focus on building attachment in the early weeks at home post-international Haiti adoption. Lots of physical contact is very important. Hold and carry the child as much as possible. Use a baby sling or cloth carrier to carry her or him facing inwards against your body. Wear your baby all day while you go about household tasks or out shopping or walking. Play together. Newly-adopted babies should be responded to when they cry in the night. Leaving a baby or child to cry is not appropriate for newly-adopted children.

5. Prepare as much as you can beforehand.

6. You will feel exhausted. Get your support system in place before you return.

7.  Take time for yourself, your spouse, and your other children. You need to take care of yourself. Make sure you eat nutritious food, get some exercise, and don’t neglect your marriage.

8. Get help from your support network when you feel stressed. If you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or depressed or are feeling frustrated or worried about your child’s behavior, talk it over with another adoptive parent you know and trust. Don’t hesitate to call your social worker about problems and don’t pretend everything is fine when there are problems.

Developing a Home Safety Plan to Help Your Adopted Child Achieve Felt Safety in Their New Home

A crucial step in the bonding and attachment process with your adopted child is helping them develop feelings of safety in their new home and family. Developing a Home Safety Plan can be part of this process. This is especially important with older children and with children who have been adopted internationally. Here are steps to help you develop a plan:

1. Develop a written safety plan and post it in an accessible place in your home. Include emergency phone numbers and an outline of your home with arrows showing the paths to any exits. Take into consideration different types of emergencies, such as medical, fire, storms, extreme heat/cold, etc. when developing your plans.
2. As age-appropriate, walk your child through your plans step-by-step so that they become familiar. Use pictures. Use this as an opportunity to identify any special considerations you may need to make or any specific responsibilities your child may have (e.g. waiting for a parent versus leaving the home unaccompanied). Identify and practice the safe paths to leave your home and a specific location to meet, like a neighbor’s house, in case you get separated.
3. Ensure that your children have ways to get in touch with you if needed. Help them memorize important phone numbers and teach them about knowing how to ask trusted adults for help. Teach them to use the phone or text.
4. Go over example situations in which your child may need to ask for help. Some children may have trouble identifying what is an emergency or not, depending on their age or developmental needs, so rehearsing possible situations can be helpful. For example, what do they need to do if you become separated at the store and that hiding when you are shopping is not a fun game.
5. Plan for the long term. Emergencies, even small ones, can awaken old traumas or be traumatic in their own right and may require additional aftercare. Being aware of this ahead of time can help you know what to look for in the long run, if an emergency does end up occurring.
6. You, as the parent, need to remain calm. Teach your child you are safe and can be trusted. Responding to the child’s concerns helps build a lasting bond that starts with trust.

Building Arizona Families Truly Knows the Blessings of a Haiti Adoption

Haiti Adoption

Due to recent health concerns, many people are experiencing what it’s like to have a lack of supplies, creating the need to ration. For some, though, a life with little food, water, and hygiene is a daily reality. Imagine a child not having clean water when he is thirsty or food when he is hungry. For the first time, many Americans are learning how it feels to go without, to not have what we consider, basic needs that we have been accustomed to being readily available. Consider Haiti adoption –  a short flight from the United States and sharing a border with the Dominican Republic.  Their country has been ravaged by natural disasters, and many children go without the basic necessities of life.  These precious children deserve a full life and the opportunity to become prosperous adults, just like all children should. Haiti adoption provides the future every child deserves, giving them the love, support, and safety necessary to change the course of their future forever.

Thousands of precious Haitian children are praying for a loving family. Can you open your heart and home to provide hope and a future for these precious children? Building Arizona Families is a non-profit, Hague accredited adoption agency with years of experience helping families through international adoption. We gladly work with U.S families in any state through our Haiti adoption program. Every child deserves a chance to feel loved and safe.

Haiti International Adoption Stays Strong Despite A Declining Adoption Rate

International adoption rates have declined by 70% since 2005. This significant decline has created a negative impact on the vast number of children needing homes throughout the world. International adoption is a beautiful way for children, who often live in abject poverty, to grow up in with greater life opportunities.

Despite the falling global adoption rates, international adoption in Haiti has remained strong, creating opportunities for orphaned children. We are grateful for the support of the Haiti government and the orphanages which care for the children before they are adopted. Because of our strong relationships with the Haitian government, Building Arizona Families is honored to be one of just a handful of U.S. adoption agencies that are permitted to provide international adoption services for the children of Haiti.

The Declining Adoption Rates Affect Children Around The World

By 2015, international adoption dropped 72% percent from 2005 due to countries changing influential laws on adoption. Countries like Romania, Guatemala, Russia, and China were all former leaders in international adoption but began to cut back or prevent international adoption. In 2005, almost 46,000 children were adopted with nearly half of those children finding their forever family in the United States. Sadly, in 2015 this number dropped down to a mere 12,000 in total, with only a little over 5,000 children finding the United States as their new home. Since the U.S. Department of State assumed responsibility for the oversight of inter-country adoption in 2008, the number of abandoned, orphaned, and vulnerable children around the world extended into the tens of millions, yet the number of children adopted by American citizens continues to decrease annually under their oversight, to a new historic low of 4,059 in 2018.

No matter what the reason for this drastic decline, there are children all around the world in desperate need of a safe and loving home. We remain grateful to the government of Haiti for recognizing the need to provide orphans with the opportunity for a better life through Haiti international adoption.

Save a Child From Less Fortunate Living Conditions with Haiti International Adoption

Due to economic conditions and natural catastrophes, there are not enough families or homes in Haiti available to care for Haitian children in need. Every Haitian child deserves the opportunity to feel loved and safe with a forever family. This is where we need your help! Building Arizona Families is looking for loving adoptive families across the United States who are ready to offer a Haitian child a reliable, permanent forever family. As a non-profit, Hague accredited adoption agency, we assist families across the United States as they commit to changing a child’s life and begin their Haiti international adoption journey.

Haiti Adoption Requirements Helps Put Children First

Haiti adoption requirements

Many women and men who long for children experience pain and heartache.  This heartache can turn to joy through welcoming a beautiful and ready to be loved child into your loving embrace. There are also men and women already raising children who know how great the need is for Haiti orphans to have loving, stable homes.  They open their hearts and homes to provide loving security so desperately needed by Haiti orphans.

Building Arizona Families is a Hague accredited Arizona adoption agency helping women and men around the United States find the joy and laughter they have been waiting for. Our agency is only one of a handful of adoption agencies that the Haitian government has chosen to work with.  One of the reasons we are a selected agency is that our staff are very knowledgeable in regards to fulfilling Haiti adoption requirements including government applications/forms, and the actual requirements included by the government in the adoption process.  The process is stringent and time consuming, because the Haitian government takes its’ responsibility to protect children very seriously.  Families who are adopting Haitian children really wouldn’t want it any other way- it’s right to put the children first always.

Meeting the Haiti Adoption Requirements for a Brighter Future

The Haiti government protects their native children and wants to ensure they have a bright and promising future ahead of them. They adhere strongly to their Haiti adoption requirements to find the very best of homes for their children needing a forever family. Unfortunately, the land conditions, illness, natural disasters and poverty in Haiti cause hardship and hopeless conditions for its people, children included. Many families in the U.S., however, are eligible to adopt a child from Haiti and give them the forever family they wish for.

The list of Haiti adoption requirements are issued by the Haitian government in order to ensure it is finding safe, loving homes for its children. Some of the requirements adoptive families would need to meet are:

  • Opposite-sex married couples, one parent at least the age of 30 and both parents not older than age 48
  • Single women must be 35-48 years old
  • Financially stable in order to provide for the child
  • No one in the home can have any unlawful activity in their background

Find out more about the Haiti adoption requirements HERE, and see if your family is eligible to adopt a beautiful child from Haiti waiting for their forever home.

How the Laws of Haiti Adoption Requirements Changed Haiti Adoption

In 2013, the Haiti Parliament voted to change the adoption laws that were previously written in 1974. The New Adoption Law for Haiti was put in place, giving adoptive families new criteria in order to meet the new adoption requirements. The Haitian government proceeded to hand select a group of Hague accredited adoption agencies that would work in the best interest of the children of Haiti. Building Arizona Families was one of the adoption agencies the Haitian government chose to successfully work with.

Our Hague accredited adoption agency has found many wonderful adoptive homes for the children of Haiti with families around the U.S. We have been blessed to see these families flourish with love brought into their forever family.

If your family meets the adoption requirements for Haiti, you too can experience the overwhelming love and joy that adopting a child from Haiti could bring into your life. These children are strong, beautiful, and loving children wanting love and safety for their future.

Be a Forever Parent of Haitian Child in Need with Haiti Adoption Agency

Haiti adoption agencies

Orphaned children in Haiti need forever homes and forever parents to give these vulnerable children hope for a healthy, happy life. Our U.S. based, internationally accredited adoption agency works with the Haiti government to help these children in need. Building Arizona Families is one of only a handful of Haiti adoption agencies approved by the Haiti government to serve as a Haiti adoption agency for U.S. families.

U.S. Families Have so Much to Share!

Lifestyles and amenities available to us in the United States can sometimes go unappreciated because of the availability of plentiful resources. Clean, flowing water, safe shelter, nutritious food, access to medical care and quality education are all readily available for U.S. families.

When children from Haiti are adopted by a family in the United States, they are given the chance to share in these opportunities. The availability of health care, education, and proper nutrition are fundamental essentials in a U.S. child’s life, and unfortunately, due to the impoverished state of Haiti, many Haitian children are not able to receive the care and attention they need.

How Haiti’s Poverty is Impacting Children

Haiti has experienced devastating hardship that negatively impacts Haitian people every day. Haiti is vulnerable to natural disasters, mainly hurricanes, and more than 96% of the population are exposed to these natural disasters. The country is trying its best to build resilience, but as the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, more than 6 million Haitians live on less than $2.41 US dollars a day.

This leaves many children without proper nutrition, medical attention, and a safe home to grow up in. There are so many children in some Haiti orphanages that they sometimes have to turn away children in need. However, we can help these children find a beautiful, loving family and a safe home to grow up in.

Children from the ages of infancy to 12 years old are waiting to have a forever family and be provided the necessities needed to thrive. As one of the internationally accredited Haiti adoption agencies, we are deeply investing in helping the people of Haiti and working in conjunction with their government to serve as a Haiti adoption agency for U.S. families, our relationships in Haiti are strong. Because Building Arizona Families has built a relationship of trust with the Haitian government, we are able to manage the internal paperwork for you, and help you more easily walk through the 24-36 month Haiti adoption process. We would be honored to serve you as you begin this beautiful chapter in your life.

Adopting The Children That Are Really In Need

While the vast majority of Haiti orphans are typically healthy, there is an urgent need for forever families for special needs children. With limited medical supplies, low availability of doctors, and harmful environmental factors, children with special needs are in desperate need of loving homes. Special needs seen in Haiti children are malnutrition, HIV, anemia, and children that are victims of neglect. These children sadly do not receive the care they need due to the widespread poverty in their country.

However, they still need help and loving forever homes! They urgently need to be provided with proper medical and developmental care. With selfless, loving families in the United States like yours, the children with special needs that are languishing can find love, happiness, and hope for their futures. If your family can provide a forever home for a special needs Haitian child, please visit us HERE to find out more information on International adoption through our Haiti adoption agency.

Whether special needs or not, every child deserves to be safe and loved. Are you feeling called to change a child’s life? Are you and your family able and willing to transform the future for a Haiti child? If so, adopting a child through an internationally accredited and Haiti government-approved adoption agency may be the perfect way to grow your forever family and provide a life that is above and beyond a Haiti child’s expectations.
