Our International Family Adoption Agency Supports the Parenting Journey

International Family Adoption Agency

As an international family adoption agency, Building Arizona Families recognizes that a common issue among children who are adopted internationally or from foster care is food hoarding or food issues. While it can be frustrating to deal with as a parent, there are some strategies to handling it successfully.

Our International Family Adoption Agency Supports Adoptive Parents and Parenting Children with Food Issues

The trauma of an experience, maybe years in the past, could still live with and haunt adopted children. They may have had a deep-seated belief they were going to starve. This belief propels them to take extra food when they are full, take a fist full of candy, or hide snacks under the bed. Here are a few key responses to food issues that may bring healthy results.

1. Compassion. Many adoptive parents can’t imagine what it was like to be starving as an infant, toddler, or youngster. Remember where your adopted child has come from, what their brain is whispering to them, and what they live with.

2.  Reassurance. Let your adopted child know it’s going to be okay, that you will take care of them, and assure them there is enough to eat. It’s reassurance that builds up self-confidence and belief that they actually will be okay. It’s reassurance that plants seeds of trust deep. While the trauma of not getting enough food to eat may always live with your adopted child, you can bring about a sense of peace.

3.  Freedom. Give your adopted child a box, a bag, or a place where they can get food and let them know it is there specifically for them if they feel hungry and put their name on it. This will allow freedom for reassurance that there will be food for them and it gives them control.

These strategies may take some time to implement. Remember, food issues and food hoarding come from a place we may not understand. It’s a deep-seated belief there won’t be enough, they’ll be left out, or have to go without. That’s something no human being should ever have to go through. For adopted children, we can do much to help ease their worries and find comfort.

Developing a Home Safety Plan to Help Your Adopted Child Achieve Felt Safety in Their New Home

A crucial step in the bonding and attachment process with your adopted child is helping them develop feelings of safety in their new home and family. Developing a Home Safety Plan can be part of this process. This is especially important with older children and with children who have been adopted internationally. Here are steps to help you develop a plan:

1. Develop a written safety plan and post it in an accessible place in your home. Include emergency phone numbers and an outline of your home with arrows showing the paths to any exits. Take into consideration different types of emergencies, such as medical, fire, storms, extreme heat/cold, etc. when developing your plans.
2. As age-appropriate, walk your child through your plans step-by-step so that they become familiar. Use pictures. Use this as an opportunity to identify any special considerations you may need to make or any specific responsibilities your child may have (e.g. waiting for a parent versus leaving the home unaccompanied). Identify and practice the safe paths to leave your home and a specific location to meet, like a neighbor’s house, in case you get separated.
3. Ensure that your children have ways to get in touch with you if needed. Help them memorize important phone numbers and teach them about knowing how to ask trusted adults for help. Teach them to use the phone or text.
4. Go over example situations in which your child may need to ask for help. Some children may have trouble identifying what is an emergency or not, depending on their age or developmental needs, so rehearsing possible situations can be helpful. For example, what do they need to do if you become separated at the store and that hiding when you are shopping is not a fun game.
5. Plan for the long term. Emergencies, even small ones, can awaken old traumas or be traumatic in their own right and may require additional aftercare. Being aware of this ahead of time can help you know what to look for in the long run, if an emergency does end up occurring.
6. You, as the parent, need to remain calm. Teach your child you are safe and can be trusted. Responding to the child’s concerns helps build a lasting bond that starts with trust.

International Haiti Adoption Protects Haitian Children From Risks

International Adoption Haiti

Despite the global pandemic, Building Arizona Families is still providing services to begin, or continue the international Haiti adoption journey. The IBESR (also the Central Authority for adoptions in Haiti) has chosen BAF to place children from Haiti with adoptive families in the United States since 2005.

When the Haitian government recognized the serious risks children face in institutions, they acknowledged the importance of transitioning away from institutions to more community-based support to improve children’s outcomes. In an attempt to protect Haitian orphans from a life full of uncertainty and instability, the Haitian government strives to provide better for these children. These efforts include actively planning and developing appropriate alternative placements, like international Haiti adoption.

There is a great need for families to adopt Haitian children and offer them a stable, loving family. We are currently seeking families who would like to adopt children over the age of six and are open to adopting siblings. An unknown but not forgotten number of children in Haiti need a healthier and safer life. Learn more about Haiti adoptions at Building Arizona Families HERE and let us know how we can better serve you on your international Haiti adoption journey.

When Haiti Adoption Stays in the Family for Two Precious Haitian Children

Haiti Adoption

In Haitian culture, caring for extended family is an important value and responsibility. When a child in Haiti cannot be cared for by a parent, mainly because of death, poverty, incarceration, or the inability to provide proper care, Haitian households entrust aunts and uncles to provide a home for the child. When there is no extended family to turn to, a creche (orphanage) is the next step. For a Building Arizona Families forever family, an aunt and uncle in the United States were able to give a beautiful life to their two nieces through Haiti adoption.

A BAF Adoptive Family Provides a Safe and Loving Home for Their Haitian Nieces

An adoptive family of Building Arizona Families shares their incredible story of providing a forever home for their two nieces from Haiti. Nancy and Red are married and live in Tucson, Arizona. Nancy was born in Haiti and immigrated to the United States. Because of Nancy’s sister’s untimely death, her two nieces no longer had a safe and loving home. Before Nancy’s sister passed away, she asked Nancy and Red to care for her girls and provide them the safe and loving home they need. Promptly, Nancy and Red began to explore the Haiti adoption process.

Read below the thoughts Nancy and Red had when making this remarkable decision to begin their Haiti adoption journey –

“We know this is the right thing to do and are committed to following through with this last request. We are motivated not only out of obligation but by the love we wish to give the girls throughout their entire lives. We have the time, resources, and inclination to be proud dutiful parents and look forward to supporting the girls spiritually and financially throughout the course of their development and beyond into college or whatever post-high school pursuit they may choose. We will preserve and respect the girl’s unique Haitian culture and encourage them to learn and explore other cultures.”

Any adoption journey can present its own challenges, and even a relative Haiti adoption can experience the same complexities as others. But Nancy and Red persevered and brought the girls home to America. Both girls are now thriving in their new home, surrounded by family and friends. Nancy is committed to keeping the girls connected to their Haitian heritage, and the girls still have relationships with other extended family members in Haiti. Beautiful adoption stories like this is why Building Arizona Families is passionate about finding forever families for every child possible. Adopting from Haiti Will Change a Child’s Life Forever

Learning How to Support Your New Child’s Life Transitions

Haiti adoptions are incredible journeys to change a child’s life. It is important, however, to be aware that early life experiences will affect your child. Every child who has lost their birth family and lived in an orphanage has experienced trauma. Be prepared to be a part of your adopted Haitian child’s healing by addressing the effects of the trauma they have experienced.

Learning About Becoming a Multicultural Family

One important way of easing the transition into a different culture and family is by integrating parts of their Haitian culture into your family’s everyday life. It could be by cooking their favorite Haitian foods or learning to speak some Haitian Creole. Learning about and celebrating your child’s birth culture will help them develop a healthy identity while you expand your understanding of the Haitian people.

Letting Go of Control to Let Love and Happiness In

During your Haiti adoption journey, there are many aspects of the process that are out of your control. Adoption timelines and approvals by the Haitian government are a couple of the items that require you to be flexible and patient. While the journey provides lessons in patience and relinquishment of control, they can yield happiness and joy, giving you rich life lessons that will be invaluable for your family’s future.

Embracing Profound Life Change

International Haiti adoption will have its challenges, but it will also bring you the joy of growing your forever family. Your heart and core will profoundly grow when bringing your adopted child from Haiti into your family.

Feeling Confident in Beginning the Haiti Adoption Process

Haiti Adoption Process

Are you considering international adoption? Have you looked into adopting from Haiti? As an internationally accredited and Haitian government approved adoption agency, Building Arizona Families is here to help you better understand the Haiti adoption process so you can feel confident in the next steps to take.

Taking the First Step, Choosing Your Adoption Agency

Adopting a precious child from Haiti is an amazing, life changing decision. All children deserve the love of a family and the opportunity to thrive. Haiti adoption allows these children to find love, safety, and security in their forever home.

Finding an adoption agency you trust is the first step of beginning the Haiti adoption process. Building Arizona Families is a non-profit, Hague accredited adoption agency (required for legal international adoption) and is one of just 19 U.S. adoption agencies permitted to work in Haiti. Our agency would be honored to support your family on this amazing journey and watch as your family grows through adoption!

Step by Step Haiti Adoption Process

The Haiti adoption process takes about 24 months. After contacting Building Arizona Families, these are the next steps in the adoption process:

• Complete a home study. This can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months. During a home study, there are different interviews that will take place to get to know the adoptive family. A social worker will also take time learning about your home and seeing the environment your child will live in.

• Apply for adoption eligibility. This typically takes up to 3 months and determines if requirements are met to adopt from Haiti.

• Waiting for referral. With a longer time frame, this can take about 6 to 8 months due to Haitian legal intricacies.

• Socialization period. For two weeks the adoptive family travels to Haiti to complete their socialization period with their adoptive child.

• Gaining Haitian government approval to adopt. This can take up to 8 months for the Haitian government to give final approval of adoption.

• Bringing your child home! The final trip is a six day bonding period where you will bond with your child before taking them home. At the end of the six days the family can return to the USA with their new child!

How Building Arizona Families Helps You

At Building Arizona Families, we strive to help families grow through the beautiful gift of adoption. We provide the highest level of service and communication. With over 12 years of experience in Haiti, we have hands-on connections that benefit our adoptive families.

Adopting Children From Haiti Saves Lives – International Adoption How-To

Adopting Children From Haiti in 2019 Changes a Child’s Future Forever

international adoption, Haiti adoption, adopting children from Haiti

The holidays in Haiti for orphans are very different than the holidays for foster children in America. Being a foster child in the U.S. is very difficult, but financial resources for the care of foster children is provided through government funding. Resources are scarce in Haiti, as Haiti is the most impoverished country in the Western Hemisphere. Over 80% of Haitian residents live in poverty, and frequently the most impoverished families are forced to give their children to the creches (orphanages) as they are unable to feed and clothe them. Haiti adoption truly changes a child’s future.  Building Arizona Families is an accredited adoption agency, and one of the few U.S. adoption agencies approved to handle international adoption from Haiti by the Haitian government.

Joyous Orphaned Haiti Children Dream About Forever Families – Will You Consider Adopting Children From Haiti?

Despite the poverty in Haiti, (ranked below many African countries) the children are usually joyful, generally healthy, and resourceful. A discarded water bottle can become a doll, and rolled up rags can become a ball that provides hours of play! At Christmas, a soccer ball for a Haitian creche goes a long way to make the children happy, as do items like new socks and shoes or a box of crayons. If a child being raised in these difficult circumstances tugs at your heartstrings, we invite you during this New Year to consider adopting a child from Haiti.

We Will Walk With You Through the International Adoption Process

International adoption from Haiti requires working with an internationally accredited adoption agency with an adoption agreement from the Haitian government. Building Arizona Families is delighted that our adoption agency was chosen to be one of only a handful of agencies in the United States that is approved to facilitate adoption of Haitian children. Our relationship with the Haitian government is very positive, and our adoption agency is able to process Haitian adoptions with relative ease because of the relationship we enjoy.

Building Arizona Families Personally Understands the Haiti Adoption Process

Building Arizona Families is deeply committed to the children of Haiti, and we are involved in humanitarian work along with our adoption work. Some of the staff at our internationally accredited adoption agency have adopted children internationally, and so we are also deeply committed to the prospective adoptive families that we serve. We understand the process personally, and we work hard to ensure that the adoptive process goes as smoothly as possible for the children and families we serve through the Haiti adoption process.

Considering International Adoption?

international adoption, adopting a child from Haiti, Haiti adoption agencies

International adoption is a wonderfully compassionate way to grow your family! At Building Arizona Families, our international team focuses on Haiti adoptions. Why should you consider adopting a child from Haiti? There are several really good reasons!

The Benefits of Adopting a Child From Haiti

First, in terms of international adoption, international travel to meet and bond with the child is a requirement. In some instances, more than one visit is required. Haiti is very close, just off the coast of Florida, so the required travel is not as rigorous or expensive as traveling to countries much further away.

Secondly, adopting a child from Haiti gives each child a future they would not have had otherwise. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Of the approximately 7.5 million people living there, about 75% live below the Haiti poverty level. Hope to change that is dim, as the unemployment level is at approximately 60%, and literacy is approximately 55%. Many families simply cannot afford to provide adequate nutrition, medicine, and education to their children. Malnutrition or disease kills approximately one in five Haitiian children. Decimated by hurricanes, the grim situation has become more serious in the past few years as the rebuilding process is slow.  As you can see, adopting a child from Haiti could mean the difference between life and death. If you are considering international adoption, we hope you will give serious consideration to Haiti.

Approved Haiti Adoption Agencies Are Limited

The Haitian government does not work with every adoption agency. They are required to be internationally accredited and abide by Haitian adoption regulations. When dealing with the orphanages and the Haitian government, Building Arizona Families has a long standing, positive relationship that will be highly beneficial in the international adoption process. In reviewing Haitian adoption agencies, it is important to ensure that the agency is Hague accredited (Building Arizona Families is), and that they are an approved Haiti adoption agency by the Haitian government.

Building Arizona Families Specializes in Haiti Adoptions

Building Arizona Families is grateful that you are considering international adoption and grateful for the time you have taken to find out more information about adopting a child from Haiti. We would love to visit with you further about how you can change a child’s life forever. We offer onsite seminars that answer all of your questions, as well as online seminars. Additionally, we invite you to call us at 623-692-4424 or e-mail us. We would be happy to set up a private meeting and answer any questions you have, or personally take you through the online seminar. You can also find more information about the types of adoption, the child adoption process, and adoption cost on our website HERE.

Are you a United States Citizen Considering International Adoption?

international adoption Haiti

Are you a United States citizen considering international adoption? International adoption in the United States is governed by the Department of State and is considered one of their highest priorities. The United States entered into the Hague Convention in 2008. The Hague Convention is an international agreement that establishes international standards of practices for intercountry adoptions. The Convention therefore applies to all international adoptions by U.S. citizens from other countries.

U.S. CITIZENS MUST USE A HAGUE ACCREDITED ADOPTION AGENCY FOR INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION FROM HAGUE CONVENTION COUNTRIES

United States citizens desiring to adopt children internationally from Hague Convention countries are required by law to work with a Hague accredited adoption agency. A Hague accredited adoption agency is one that carries out responsibilities for ethical adoption under the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption. Additionally, working with a Hague accredited adoption agency helps provide additional protection for children, adoptive parents, and birth parents. As a matter of fact, the Preamble to the Hague Adoption Convention reads, “Recognizing that the child…should grow up in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love, and understanding.”

INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION HAITI

Building Arizona Families is proud to be a Hague accredited adoption agency. Additionally, we are one of a select few accredited adoption agencies that have been chosen by Haiti to provide international adoption Haiti services. There are literally thousands of vulnerable children in Haiti that currently live in creches (orphanages) who continue to pray for loving, forever families. The urgency of adopting children from Haiti is that the country is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, has experienced multiple national disasters, and has few resources to meet the needs of their large orphan population. Please consider international adoption of Haiti children who deserve a bright future. For more information about Haiti adoptions, see additional information on our website HERE.  You can also reach out directly to Lisa Peterson, Haiti Adoption Program Manager at 623-692-4424 or through e-mail HERE.

Wondering About Haitian Adoption Requirements?

Children's photo of Haitian adoption requirements Adopting a baby or an older child from Haiti is a wonderful way to grow your forever family! It provides a future for a precious child who otherwise would have very little possibility of living a prosperous life.  Below is some information that you need to know about Haitian adoption requirements.

Haiti is the most impoverished nation in the Western Hemisphere and has had additional substantial negative impacts from recent hurricanes. Children living in Haitian orphanages desperately need loving families to open their hearts and homes to them.

Haitian Adoption Requirements Include Several Restrictions

It you are interested in adopting a child from Haiti, it is important to know that the Haitian government has determined Haitian adoption requirements. They include age, marital status, and income to name a few of the requirements. Age restrictions include one parent being at least 30 years old, but not over the age of 50. Additionally, parents must be at least 14 years older than the adopted child.

Couples adopting a child from Haiti must be married at least five years or have five years of cohabitation.   Single women who meet the age requirements are also welcome to adopt children from Haiti. Additionally, there is no restriction on the number of biological and adopted children a family has as long as the family is able to financially provide for the newly adopted child.

Providing Criminal History and Medical History Are Haitian Adoption Requirements

Another requirement is that families adopting a baby from Haiti may not have a criminal history. From a medical history perspective, adoptive families must not have a past or current diagnosis of a life-threatening or communicable disease. Additionally, they can not have any other medical condition that negatively impacts their ability to parent, including significant mental health issues or substance abuse challenges. Adoptive families are also required to undergo a psychological evaluation.

Building Arizona Families offers informative adoption seminars on adopting a child from Haiti. For more information on the process of adopting a child from Haiti and to find out about upcoming adoption seminars, please call or e-mail Lisa Peterson, Haiti Adoption Program Manager. She would be happy to any additional questions you might have.
